Biopics
Not all narrative films have to be entirely fictional. Biopics are based on the lives of real people. They focus on figures who have had an important significance throughout history. However, most biopics will embellish the truth so that the script is tighter and better paced.
Walk The Line
This film tells the life story of Johnny Cash, the famous country singer. It starts with his early years when he suffered the loss of his brother. The main focus of the narrative is on the budding relationship between Cash and a singer named June Carter. Joaquin Phoenix takes on the lead role and sings the greatest hits of Johnny Cash himself.
The Social Network
David Fincher directs this dark drama about the founding of Facebook. It explores the personality of its creator, Mark Zuckerberg and the people he betrayed to become successful. The Social Network has received a large amount of acclaim from film critics.
Malcolm X
Malcolm X was a controversial civil rights activist whose militant views contrasted with those of Martin Luther King. Spike Lee’s biopic shows the harsh treatment that Malcolm X suffered, as well as how he gained attention as a social figure. When Lee first announced this project there were concerns over how he would portray Malcolm X. However, once it was released, it was given rave reviews.
Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen was a very popular British rock band. This film chronicles their career, from its formation until the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek takes on the lead role of Mercury, a flamboyant but troubled figure. The movie contains most of Queen’s best songs, including I Want To Break Free and Another One Bites The Dust.
Ed Wood
Ed Wood was a struggling film director whose work has been widely mocked. This biopic attempts to show him in a more positive light. It goes into detail on the production of his movies and the drama that dominated his real life.
Lawrence Of Arabia
David Lean directed this epic movie about T.E. Lawrence, a soldier during World War One. Lawrence explored Arabia and helped to forge alliances for England. The film shows his descent into violent savagery after he is exposed to the mass conflict raging around him.
